Since 1991 when I graduated with my first Master’s degree, I have dedicated my professional life to helping people create meaningful growth. Many of the people I’ve worked with over the years have suffered some form of physical or sexual violence. Helping people recover from the impact of violence and other dilemmas has been incredibly fulfilling. In 2015 I realized I may also be able to help people prevent trauma and I dedicated my spare time to help create a program to do just that by combining my love of martial arts with my professional skills. It is immensely gratifying to work with people to prevent and to overcome their pains.
The qualifications of a therapist are very important. The therapist’s education, licensing, and experience can significantly impact the client’s experience of psychotherapy.

Wendy Fine-Thomas
PhD, MA
As a young adult, I decided to funnel my appreciation of education and curiosity about people into a career as a clinical psychologist. As a student at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, I received extensive clinical training and provided individual, marital, family, and group therapy to children, adolescents, and adults. I practiced in a wide range of settings including school systems, community outreach programs, hospitals, trauma centers, and private practice settings.
Near the end of my program, I wrote a dissertation exploring women’s experience of shame. This topic was relevant to my work as a psychotherapist because when women talk in depth about their pain and challenges, they are likely to express some feelings of shame: about their mothering, their weight, their career … the list is endless. My writing about the female experience led me to want to deepen a specialization in women’s mental health. I pursued and received an internship at Harvard Medical School’s McLean Hospital, where I received clinical training from experts in the field of relational psychotherapy. At McLean Hospital, I worked with trauma survivors and observed how connection (with other survivors and with the treatment team) leads to healing and growth. From this experience I clarified my professional goal: to provide psychotherapy that helps women who are struggling create the lives they hope to live.
My private practice is focused on helping women who feel paralyzed in life move forward to feel a sense of personal competency. Many women have great success in some areas of their lives yet feel a sense of failure in other equally important areas of their lives. A woman may be professionally successful yet unable to sustain a healthy romantic relationship. Someone else may be relationally connected but disappointed with repeated professional failures. Or a woman who “has it all” may be encumbered by deep unhappiness and feel like an imposter in her own life. These are the women I help. This is what I do: I utilize my specialized training and professional resources to help women move beyond feeling overwhelmed to create a life of peace, happiness, and connection.
